This term relates to customs and practices which have been gradually established in the course of time in a particular port. If a C/P provides loading and discharging according to the custom of the port (or with customary dispatch or as fast as can) the lay time becomes indefinite, a situation unfavorable to ship-owners as they will find it difficult to put a claim for demurrage or damages for detention.
